In southern Ethiopia, the practice of abduction is a common and legitimate way of procuring a bride. On her way home from school 14-year-old Hirut Assefa is abducted by a 29-year-old farmer. In an attempt to escape she grabs a rifle and ends up shooting her would-be husband.
After being charged with murder by local police, Hirut faces the death penalty though she argues she acted in self-defence. When Meaza Ashenafi, an empowered and tenacious young lawyer, hears about Hirut’s case she embarks on a long tenacious battle to save her life. But the legal battle will test the limits of everything Meaza and Hirut hold dear.
Difret won audience awards at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, and is seen as a powerful voice for women in sub-Sahara Africa.
